Number of cocaine users seeking treatment increases five-fold

Thursday September 03 2009

The number of people seeking treatment for cocaine addiction has increased five-fold, according to new data from the Health Research Board.

The Board said however that cocaine use in Ireland remains at relatively low levels compared to heroin.

The figures, which cover a five year period to 2007, show most cocaine users take the drug on weekends or as part of a binge involving other substances.

The Health Research Board said cocaine users come from different backgrounds to opiate users.

The figures also show that the number of heroin users in Dublin is levelling out.

However heroin use outside of the capital is on the increase.
