Pupils proud of teacher Doreen

Wednesday November 16 2011

THE STUDENTS at St. Philomena's Primary School in Bray should be very proud of their teacher Doreen Mchale who came second in the 'Extending Learning Beyond the Classroom' category at the Microsoft 2011 Global Forum Educator Awards.

The top three finalists in each category were recognised and received an Intel-powered classmate PC for their classroom.

Doreen was at an awards ceremony in Washington on Friday where winners were selected from more than 115 projects, narrowed down from over 200,000 applicants in total.

They had competed in national and regional events over the course of the year to qualify for the worldwide competition.

Doreen's project 'Birds of Bray' came second in her category. The scheme was designed to develop students' non-fiction report writing skills within the context of a collaborative, local bird study. Students created a blog to collaborate with others on shared research and report writing projects, and to share their findings with others around the world.

18 awards were presented last week to educators and their projects in six categories.
