Sad farewell to 'Gentle' Joe Whelan
Wednesday February 03 2010
MANY PEOPLE in Kilmacanogue were saddened to hear of the passing of Joseph (Joe) Whelan last week. Joe passed away peacefully at the Blackrock Hospice after a short illness but as was described at his funeral mass, it was more of a broken heart after he lost his beloved wife Sheila just over a year ago.
The huge attendance at last Saturdays Requiem Mass in Kilmacanogue showed just how fondly he was thought of in this community and in Bray.
He played for many years for Kilmacanogue G.A.A. Club and after hanging up the boots; he turned to golf and was a very prominent member of the Glencormac Inn Golf Society over the years and the name Joe Whelan appears quite a few times on the perpetual trophies in the society.
He will be sadly missed by his daughters Sylvia, Linda and Andrea, son in law Patrick and his three grandchildren of whom he was so proud of, Cathal, Eoghan and Siobhan, Paddy Lawless (Kelly) and all his extended family and friends and by us all in Kilmacanogue that had the pleasure to know him.
Farewell to 'Gentle Joe' and may the fairways of heaven be cut to your liking. Rest in Peace.
