A traditional Irish taste to St. Patrick's Festival

Wednesday March 10 2010

AS PART of The St Patrick's Festival in Bray, the Bray and Roundwood branches of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann will perform in The Mermaid Arts Centre on Tuesday March 16 at 8 p.m.

This will be the first time such a gathering of traditional talent has been seen in the Mermaid and promises to be a fantastic night of the best of traditional music song and dance.

Through the hard work and success of both Comhaltas branches a renewed interest and awareness of traditional music and dance has been fostered in the area.

Many of the young musicians involved are now current Fleadh Ceoil winners and all have achieved great success in their respective solo, duet and group competitions in the 2009 Wicklow, Leinster and All Ireland Championships.

Further awards to Bray and Roundwood Comhaltas over the recent past include, best overall winners in The Bray St Patrick's day parade 2008 and also winners of the open category 2009.

The traditional musicians of Bray have been busy learning Celtic harp. Flute, Fiddle, Uilleann Pipes, Whistle and Concertina, for many of the younger players the concert on March 16 in the Mermaid will be their first public performance.

The advanced players are well seasoned performers having travelled to play in concerts and sessions in Connemara, Achill Island, Inis Oirr and Fermanagh.

A total of over 80 performers including musicians Sean Nos and Ceili dancers and the 'The Curtlestown Straw Boys' will set the stage alight and bring a truly Irish flavour to Bray for this year's St. Patrick's Festival celebrations.
