Abused Garda after his Christmas party

Thursday January 19 2006

A man out who ended up abusing a Garda officer after attending a Christmas party had his case adjourned until January 27 to see if he comes to the attention of Bray Gardaí in the meantime.

Ian Hempenstall, 22 Wolfe Tone Square East, Bray pleaded guilty to being drunk in public at Sidmonton Avenue on December 18 and using threatening and abusive behaviour.

Garda Declan McDonald said he found the defendant in a drunken state with a friend who appeared to have been injured. Hempenstall told him to 'f*** off and go f*** yourself.'

Asked in court to account for his behaviour, Hempenstall apologised and said it wouldn't happen again. He added that he was at a Christmas party earlier in the night.

'Doesn't sound like a very friendly Christmas party,' replied Judge Murrough Connellan.

The defendant also claimed he lost his temper because he asked Garda McDonald to help his friend, and he wouldn't.
