The hugely successful Bray Basketball Blitz resumed for a third term last Monday at Ballywaltrim Community Centre, courtesy of the Co. Wicklow VEC Sports Promotion Unit and Bray Drugs Education and Prevention Programme.

This is the third term of the Blitzes which they have been running with local young people since last September. The programme is aimed at young people from 5th and 6th classes and are organised in a drop in and play basis.

Young people are welcome to come along, sign up and are then organised into teams of seven by coaches at the Blitz.

Teams then play each other in a round robin style tournament over 60 minutes. Currently there are thirty five young people attending the Blitzes on Monday evenings.

They were organised in response to a desire from young people and their parents to see more basketball orientated activities and events organised in the town outside of school in their local communities.

The Blitzes also tied into the Sports Promotion Unit & Bray Drugs Awareness Forum's organised Sports Expo in November 2007 where players from UCD Marian Basketball Club attended and provided coaching clinics to students from a number of Bray based primary and secondary schools.

As a result of the positive feedback from the first term and from the Sports Expo it was decided to organise and hold Blitzes during January & February and again in April and May 2008.

The Blitzes will run over a six week period on Monday evenings from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Ballywaltrim Community Centre until May 19.

The main objective of the is to promote the sport of basketball, increase the number of young people both male and female participating in the sport and to establish a local juvenile club in the town for underage players and in the long term a senior club.
