Burglary count surges compared to last year
SERGEANT WARNS PUBLIC TO PROTECT HOMES
BURGLARIES HAVE increased 'significantly' in Bray and Greystones compared to this time last year, according to gardaí.
Sergeant John Fitzpatrick of Bray Garda Station said that people can take a number of measures to protect their homes, including putting money in the bank.
'We would urge people not to keep large sums of money in the house,' said Sgt. Fitzpatrick. 'Use a secure facility, be it a bank, credit union or Post Office.'
He added that using a safe in the house may not be as secure as you would think. 'We have had cases where the safe itself has been moved from the house by burglars,' he said.
Sgt. Fitzpatrick added that firearms and ammunition should be stored separately, as well as the trigger mechanism for any rifle in the house.
Generally speaking, he added that people should lock their doors and windows. 'It sounds simple but keeps you safe,' he said, adding that people should ensure their home can be seen by neighbours if possible.
'Burglars tend to target unoccupied houses,' he added. 'Daytime hours between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. are high risk so invest in a timer device or ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your home if you know you won't be around.'
Furthermore, local people are advised to contact gardaí immediately if they see anything suspicious. 'We would appeal to the public to get in touch if they see anything unusual,' said Sgt. Fitzpatrick. 'If you see anything not quite right don't hesitate to ring and we would be happy to investigate.'
He said that ongoing operations are underway to target such activities, including random checkpoints around the county. Bray Garda Station can be contacted on (01) 6665300, or call 999 in an emergency.
