Council offical questioned over fire tragedy
Wednesday November 11 2009
A SENIOR official from Wicklow County Council was interrogated at Bray Garda Station last Wednesday while an inquest in to the deaths Bray firefighters Brian Murray and Mark O'Shaughnessy was being adjourned for a third time .
Inspector Noreen McBrien of Bray Garda Station informed Dublin County Coroner's Court last Wednesday that the Garda investigation is still underway. She asked Coroner Dr. Kieran Geraghty for a one-year adjournment and he agreed to postpone proceedings to late next year.
A member of the fire service said that a male Wicklow County Council official was being questioned at Bray Station on Wednesday.
Brian Murray (46) of Woodbrook Glen and Mark O'Shaughnessy (26) of Sidmonton Road, both died on the morning of September 26 2007 when they entered a burning building at Adelaide Villas off the Dargle Road.
Their deaths instigated a campaign for reform to the fire service locally as well as a campaign for a full-time fire service in Wicklow.
Dr. Geraghty told the families last year that the cause of death had been inhalation of gases. Calls have been made by elected representatives and family members to investigate the practice of 'call vetting,' relating to the fire service. The Murray family has claimed that five emergency calls were made on the day of the tragedy before a crew was dispatched to the fire.
Last February, a man was arrested and was held at Bray Garda station in relation to the incident. He was the third person to be questioned over the deaths.
A woman was arrested in October, 2008, while a man in his 40s was detained in September, 2008. Both were released without charge.
The Garda Forensic Unit, the Health and Safety Authority and Wicklow County Council each investigated the fatal blaze.
