Dressmaker Umit in final four battle
GILLETTE STYLE COMPETITION
GLENEALY STUDENT Umit Kutluk is one of four finalists in the 2011 Gillette Venus Dress of Your Dreams competition.
Umit, along with student fashion designers from art colleges around the country, was asked by Gillette to showcase his talent.
This year fashion design students were asked to choose from three of the latest Gillette Venus razors and asked to create a show-stopping dress that Gillette Venus Ambassador and Hollywood star Jennifer Lopez might wear. The dream dress should show off the beauty of a woman's legs and incorporate the colour scheme of the chosen razor.
Grafton Academy student Umit, who originally hails from Istanbul in Turkey, has lived in Wicklow since 2008 and based his design on the Gillette Venus Spa Breeze razor incorporating its blush pink colours. As a fashion designer, Umit is inspired by art, architecture and nature and is working towards having his own fashion label. Describing his love for designing, Umit said 'no one aspect is better than another - it is a step by step process, with equal importance at each stage. At the end when you have the finished garment, that's a very special part.'
Umit recently won the student design award at the DIT Fashion Show in Vicar Street Dublin this month and his hoping to be successful in this competition also.
Gillette Venus has given all four finalists a bursary to create their dress from the sketches and swatches of material submitted. The overall winner will be chosen by May 17 in Dublin. The winner will not only have the opportunity to launch their fashion career, but will win a cash prize, appear on national television and have their dress modeled in a national photocall by a top model, amongst other possible media opportunities.
