Obama request for audience with Katie

Wednesday March 10 2010

SUPERSTAR Bray boxer Katie Taylor will be joining the Obamas at the White House for this year's St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

Katie's dad and trainer Pete Taylor explained that first lady Michelle Obama, who was involved in boxing in her youth, has heard about the champion boxer and wants to meet her.

While Katie will be an invited guest of President Barack Obama, it was the first lady who put things in motion for the Bray athlete.

'We don't know all the details yet but we will be going to the White House,' said Pete.

He added that while she is delighted with the honour, Katie remains focused on training.

'It seems that Michelle did a little boxing when she was younger, also coached by her dad,' said Pete. 'She got talking about Katie at a function with Olympic Council of Ireland President Pat Hickey, and said she'd love her to be part of the official Irish delegation to the White House for St. Patrick's Day.'
