AN INVESTIGATION is being carried out by Iarnród Éireann to find out if drainage and earthworks could have contributed to the landslide that derailed a train last week.

The out of service train struck debris which had been deposited on the track, causing the front engine carriage to derail. A mixture of mud, shrubs and trees was responsible for blocking the progress of the train, which fortunately wasn't carrying any passengers at the time.

The train driver also escaped without injury.

While it is believed heavy rainfall was mainly responsible for the landslide, the investigation being carried out by Iarnród Éireann will try and see if construction works taking place near to the tracks may have played a role.

Work on the Wicklow Port Access and Town Relief Road has been taking place for some time now in close proximity to where the accident occurred.

The line looks as if it will be shut until Monday November 30 until the embankment has been strengthened considerably.

Bus services will be in operation for commuters until the line is reopened.
