THE CRISIS in Haiti has touched us all as horrific images of death, destruction and loss display the disastrous consequences of the devastating earthquake.

The children of Scoil Chaoimhin Naofa in Glendalough have borne witness to some of the harrowing images coming from the Caribbean country and decided that they couldn't just idly sit by and watch proceedings unfold. Instead they have taken some action in efforts to raise money to help with relief efforts.

Elaine O'Brien says the youngsters have given their fundraising idea all their backing.

'The children were all talking about Haiti and were quite upset at seeing people being rescued and pulled from all this rubble. They wanted to help and have been very enthusiastic. It really is a case of children helping children.'

The pupils have been busily making handmade St. Brigid's Crosses from local rushes, which sell at €2 each. The word Haiti has also been spelt out on a banner spread out on the school floor. The children aim to fill the letters up with coins found down the back of the sofa, discarded around the house or donated by family members. These coins will be added to the relief collection.

The initiative shown by the children has spread with members of the local community also volunteering to help make the St. Brigid's Crosses. The crosses are for sale at the school and McCoy's and other shops in the Glendalough area.
