Rail strike causes delays
Thursday June 05 2008
The final hours of an eight-day strike within Irish Rail hit the east coast on Friday morning as disgruntled passengers were disrupted by the cancellation of the 11.35 from Dublin to Gorey.
When asked if the train driver had phoned in sick, a representative of Iarnród Eireann confirmed that the disruption was part of an unofficial action by divers.
A Dart ferried the commuters from Dublin to Greystones, where buses brought hoards of weary travellers the rest of the way as far as Gorey. Drivers reportedly gave an undertaking late on Thursday to return to work after a deal was brokered by the Labour Relations Commission, the main part strike having been confined to employees on the Cork and Kerry lines.
Talks on the workers' issues had been continuing for more than a week with a vote to end the rail strike undertaken by drivers last Thursday evening.
