THE thorny issue of Greystones Harbour was on the table at last week's meeting of Greystones Town Council again last Tuesday.

Cllr. Simon Harris said he didn't 'want to reopen the row about the harbour' but wondered about reports saying part of the development was to be 'paused'. He said his understanding was that the community facilities were to be built first and wondered had there been a change to the planning conditions. He also said the council should receive regular updates on the harbour.

Cllr. Chris Maloney said that discussions were currently ongoing about the sale of the first block in the development to create employment in the town. 'If that happens the work won't cease.'

Cllr. Tom Fortune said 'there is a little bit of greyness there and people living in the area are hearing all kinds of stories and I have requested that there should be a public statement made by the developers. People want the project finished.'

Cllr. George Jones said there 'has always been rumours but realistically I am surprised that work is continuing in the current climate at all.' He said previously the harbour had been unusable and the current development has 'huge potential to eventually to be a massive tourist attraction.'

A member of the Harbour Liaison Committee Cllr. Ciaran Hayden said €40 million had been pumped into the harbour development so far and this would reach €60 before September.

Cllr. Fortune said 'it isn't good enough to say everything will be fine in a couple of years when in my opinion I don't think that's the case. We were told that if you reduced the number of apartments by two the scheme wouldn't be viable.'
