JOYRIDERS DESTROY PITCHES AT TEMPLE FIELD

The deep tyre tracks left at the Temple Field sportsgrounds by joyriders at the weekend.

JOYRIDERS WHO went 'doughnutting' cars around the Temple Field sportsgrounds at Wolfe Tone in Bray left the pitches useless after a late-night rampage last weekend.
The vandals caused so much damage to the pitches in the early hours of Saturday morning that teams were forced to call off their matches later that day. It is believed that they made their entrance through Sugarloaf Crescent.
Deep tyre tracks on the grass formed by at least two cars made trenches in the surface. PRO for the Wolfe Tone Youth Club Mick Gilman said that the boys were devastated when they were turned away on Saturday.
'WE HAD TO close,' he said. 'We cancelled Under-8, Under-10 and Under-14 games. It's quite likely that if there is any bit of rain then we will have to close again next weekend.'
Other soccer teams affected by the thugs include Sugarloaf, Glenview and Wolfe Tone Celtic – all adult clubs.
The pitch-users were targeted by arsonists 18 months ago when the Pavilion building clubhouse was burned out.
Wolfe Tone Youth Club awaits a lease agreement that has been in the making for over 10 years. ' We understand that Bray Town Council, who own the land, will install a fence before the lease is signed,' said Mr. Gilman. ' We heard it was to be installed after Christmas but no sign of it. A fence would put a stop to cars coming in on to the land.'
