Woman fined €1,000 following accident in which cyclist died

Wednesday November 11 2009

A BRAY woman was fined €1,000 for careless driving after an incident early this year in which cyclist John Cody lost his life.

Judy Ducorroy, 6 Woodbrook Lawn, Bray, was visibly upset at Bray District Court last Thursday where Judge Murrough Connellan also banned her from driving for two years.

63-year-old John Cody, a resident of Blackrock, died in Janruary 2009, just weeks after being hit by a car on the N11 at Kilcroney, driven by Ms. Ducorroy.

The accident occurred midmorning on Tuesday, January 6, in the southbound lane of the N11.

Ms. Ducorroy was at the wheel of a Fiat Punto. Mr. Cody spent a number of weeks on life support at Beaumont hospital before he passed away.

Gardaí agreed that there was low sun on the morning in question and the defendant did not see the cyclist. She has no previous convictions.

The 35-year-old mother of two was on her way back from a doctor's appointment with her baby son at the time of the accident.

Judge Murrough Connellan said that the matter was upsetting for everyone involved, including the family of the deceased and the defendant.

'There is an element of careless driving. If you can't see you must slow down or stop,' said Judge Connellan, before handing down the penalty.
