Bad week for schools

Wednesday March 03 2010

IT WAS a bad week for Wicklow schools in Leinster championship games. Coláiste Bhride Carnew's good run in the Juvenile Football C championship came to an end in the Leinster final while Abbey CC went down in the South Leinster Junior D1 final.

Cnoc Mhuire 2-17 Coláiste Bhride Carnew 0-7

THE FIRST twenty minutes of this game in Gracefield were very evenly contested with both sides producing fast skilful football. At this stage the Longford lads led by 0-3 to 0-2 and a close encounter seemed on the cards.

Then in the 20th minute Granard full forward Aidan McElligott was brought down and midfielder Nigel Rabbitte struck the resulting penalty to the net despite a valiant effort by goalkeeper Robert Fitzgerald. This goal seemed to inspire Granard and they went on to lead by 1-6 to 0-4 at half time.

Carnew needed a good start in the second half but that was not how it turned out. The Longford lads scored 0-7 without reply in the first fifteen minutes to put the game outside Carnew's reach. Four of these points came from Granard's diminutive corner forward Rian Brady who was outstanding. Brady's goal in the final minutes put the icing on the cake for the Longford lads but Coláiste Bhride never gave up and the final margin does not reflect their efforts.

This Coláiste Bhride team has done their school proud all year but, on the day, they met a superior side. To reach a Leinster final in this very competitive grade was a fine achievement and they can go on to even better things in future years. Their sporting behaviour throughout was a credit to their coach Jim Kirwan.

Ramsgrange CS 3-6 Abbey CC 0-2

A SOMEWHAT depleted Abbey Community College team from Wicklow were no match for Wexford side Ramsgrange in this South Leinster final in Enniscorthy. The Wexford lads led by 1-3 to 0-0 at half time and had the Abbey defence in trouble for long periods. Best for the Abbey side who were coached by Kevin Murphy were Darren Kavanagh and James Cullen in defence, Alan Hubbard in midfield and Graham Merrigan.

Camogie title for Abbey CC

THE County Wicklow senior B camogie championship was played on a blitz basis in Pearse's Park Arklow on Wednesday. It proved to be a very exciting competition with a high standard. The final was a real thriller with Abbey Community College Wicklow narrowly overcoming St Kevin's CC Dunlavin on a 31 to 2-1 scoreline.

Senior camogie 'A' final

ALL Roads lead to Pearse's Park this Thursday for the Post Primary Schools Senior A camogie final between last year's runners up Scoil Chonglais Baltinglass and Junior titleholders Coláiste Bhride Carnew. Throw in is at 2PM.

Senior football championship

COLÁISTE Bhride Carnew are through to the county Senior Football A semi final. They travelled to Bray for their quarter final replay against Presentation College and ran out comfortable winners by a 4-13 to 17 margin. They had stars on the day in Danny Gardiner, Shane Hogan, Brendan McCrea and Ian McDonald. Their semi final opponents will be De La Salle College Wicklow.

Other results

TITLE holders Scoil Chonglais qualified for the junior A girls football semi final with a comfortable win over St Kevin's CC Dunlavin while Junior A camogie holders Coláiste Bhride qualified for the semi final of that competition by beating Abbey CC Wicklow.
