Blessington lift the Dick Allen Cup again
Wednesday September 01 2010
Blessington 7-08 St. Nicholas 1-05 LITTLE, IT would appear, has changed in the lifetime of the Allen Cup. When the cup was first presented to the West Juvenile Board by the Allen family for a competition to honour the memory of a great young sportsman Dick Allen who lost his life in a tragic swimming accident in Australia, Blessington became the first winners and in fact held it for three years in a row.
When this year's final was played at Dunlavin's new grounds on Sunday evening the young 'Blues' were back to claim the trophy again - and did it in style, beating the home side St. Nicholas by 7-8 to 1-5.
It was a great occasion for the Juveniles of both clubs; a big crowd turned up to cheer on their teams. The home club had refreshments laid on for everyone, the Chairman of Bord na nOg Damien Byrne was in attendance along with South West Chairman Jimmy Birchall and County Secretary Lucy Mooney while the referee was Pat Dunne of Hollywood.
Dick Allen's twin sister Pauleen presented the cup to the winning captain Peter Manning
The player of the match award was presented to Patrick O'Connor by the sponsor Jimmy Birchall.
