Our boys Minor footballers had their first match in the newly organised spring league on Sunday, February 28 in Old Connaught.

This league was organised to provide football for teams before the League championship begins. Luke O'Toole's are a group team drawn from Aughrim, Annacurra and Tinahely. Bray started well and got the first score from Adam Conway but Luke O'Toole's responded with some good scores and led at half time by 3-3 to 1-2. Bray improved in the second half but were always chasing their physically stronger opposition. Luke O'Toole's ran out deserving winners. Well done to all the Bray boys for their commitment. Final score was Bray Emmets 1-4, Luke O'Toole's 3-9.

Team: Tadgh Dornan, Cormac O'Meadhra, Eoin O'Dea, Enda Molloy, Daire Lohan, Peter O'Reilly, Cathal O'Duilleachan, Paddy Taylor, Luke O'Reilly, Dan Mc Cann, Philip Haughton, Muiris O'Floinn, Adam Conway, (1pt), Harry Stephenson, (1.01), Daragh Maloney (2pts).

Our men's senior footballers have their first games in the 2010 senior football league when they takes on Annacurra in Old Connaught on Sunday next 7th March at 11am. Please check fixture time with team mentors.

On Sunday, our Under 9 hurlers travelled to Glasnevin with a capable group of young hurlers to play 'Na Fianna'. A sun-drenched spring morning, and superb astro facilities made the game fast and furious. The initial ground-hurling rule showed the quality of the Mobhi Road men, but Emmets came more into the fray when full-rules applied. The energetic David Maloney (1-1) and Rory Lambe (0-1) taking the plaudits there. New-comer Stephen Reynolds (2-0) and Jamie Baguley (1-0) were lively up-front, while the ever-improving Oisín Carney gave his all. The overall team performance was the most encouraging aspect given the fact that Na Fianna were arguably the best hurling side we have come up against.

Following the fixture, parents and players went to nearby Parnell Park to watch the Dublin hurlers account for Tipperary. After the game, the ever-obliging and long-serving Dublin star, Kevin Flynn, met our players for autographs and a group photo.

In Under 12 and Under 13 Camogie, our girls had two friendly games against Dublin Clubs Cuala and Faughs, Firhouse over the last 2 weekends and all girls gave good account of themselves.

Team : Aoife Conaughton, Amy O'Connor, Chloe Pritchard, Emma Groves, Eva, Orla Griffin, Katherine Hayes, Lauren Sweeney, Rachel Hand, Caitlin Hand, Maria Daly, Nicola Moore, Ruby Stewart, Sarah Hayde, Shauna Douglas, Sophie Mooney, Roisin Quigley, Orla Griffen and Shannon Scanlon.

We played Ballyboden on 21st and all the girls played a great game and were unlucky to lose by a goal.

We followed up last week's impressive display against Ballyboden with another hard game against Faughs. Another large turnout of girls for this friendly. This was our first game on grass since last October and it showed from some of our earlier touches. As the game we went on we found our feet. All the girls played well and are improving with every game. Well done girls, keep up the good work! We have no match next weekend. We wish all girls taking part in there Entrance Exams this weekend the best of luck. Training Monday's in Loreto 6.50 -8.00.

The U11 hulers played their first game of the season against a strong Balinteer St. John's team at their new all weather pitch on Saturday. Bray were a bit rusty and slack marking let Balinteer in for some easy scores but Bray came into the game more as it went on. Rory Cotter was our bravest player over the whole game and always competed for the ball. Eoghan Martin was able to disrupt a number of Balinteer attacks particularly towards the end of the first half. Noah Cummins covered a lot of ground around the middle of the field and cleared the ball well on the ground. Cian Kavanagh did good work in the forwards to win a Bray puck out and made a pass which led to a score for Bray.

Donncha Morgan used his speed to get past the whole Balinteer defence and nutmeged the keeper to score a goal. Shane Slattery took a number of good frees and sideline cuts in both halves and showed some good touches. Daniel Jakob showed good skills also particularly in the way he was able to lift the ball quickly into his hand. Bray played much better in the second half with a number of positional switches. Eoghan Potts did well in midfield and scored a great goal from a rasping shot and was unlucky not to get a few more scores. Ben Kearney was a livewire and was one of our best at tackling opponents and blocking shots and scored a goal for Bray.

The defence was much improved with Jason Pritchard making two good saves to stop certain goals. Niall Groves was very good at organising his defenders and clearing the ball away from danger. Lochlann Dougan was like a rock at full back and dealt very well with the high ball and didn't let anything go past him. Despite having the better of the exchanges in the second half, they had left themselves with too much to do and Balinteer ran out winners in the end. However they did put up a good fight and will certainly show improvements in their next hurling match.

On Saturday last, our U-10 camogie teams played two very enjoyable and well-contested games against the Cuala girls. The games were competitive and good-spirited with a strong work ethic being displayed by Bray. The home side had to dig deep with the sharp shooting Cuala hurlers a constant threat.

New-comers Ailbhe Byrne and Eva Garry did very well, supported by the industrious Carla Lennon and Allie Byrne's quality defending.

On the other team, Clare Benville typified our resilience, helped in no small measure by Tricia Phelan's bravery and Sarah Lambe covering the yards.

Emmet Bhré : Ailbhe Byrne, Allie Byrne, Carla Lennon, Daisy King, Eva Garry, Eve Murphy, Lauren Hetherington, Shauna Ryan, Bróna Murphy, Olivia Duffy, Doireann Downey.

Emmet Bhré : Chloe Murphy, Eleanor Carroll-Hayes, Emily Deveney, Sadhbh Kavanagh, Sarah Lambe, Síofra Ní Mhidigh, Maeve Moylan, Emily McKenna, Maeve O'Doherty, Tricia Phelan, Liadáin Downey, Lauren McKenna, Clare Benville.

Beimid ag traenáil arís ar an Luan beag seo, mar is gnáth, ar Astro-turf Loreto. Go dtí sin.

EIRE OG, GREYSTONES

At 7.45pm on Wednesday night referee Eddie Leonard throws in the ball. 7.48pm Lorcan Treanor is picking it out of the Éire Óg net. Kilcoole are playing the game at a high tempo and Éire Óg are struggling to keep pace. Two very well taken points from Darren Hayden - he delighted with some mazy ball carrying runs out of defence - and a point from a free from Johnny Barry (the veteran converted six in all) had the teams on level terms.

However, Kilcoole had soon again jumped to two points in front, and their lead varied between two and four points until the 50th minute. There was one occasion in the 1st half when we might have taken the lead; Roddy Carroll, at the end of a lovely bout of combined play, smashed the ball off the angle of the cross-bar and we were unlucky not to have punched home the rebound. But overall there was a worrying hesitancy about the Éire Óg play for all of this half and one searched for an explanation. W

ere our players knocked off their stride by the speed of the Kilcoole play or were they overwhelmed by the burden of our expectations? Things improved somewhat in the second half but one felt that the team never really got firing on four cylinders.

Just about 12 minutes from the end the crucial score came about and the beauty of its execution was in keeping with its importance. Éire Óg were on the ropes and the glimmer of hope was barely alive in the hearts of even the most optimistic of their followers. The sentiment among the remainder was of disappointed resignation. Kilcoole are in possession around the Éire Óg 40 and another Kilcoole score seems inevitable - throughout the game they have shown quite an ability to take scores from distance.

One's inclination is to turn away from the unbearable spectacle of the last nail being driven into the Éire Óg coffin. Ach, thankfully, ní mar a síltear bítear (reality does not always follow our preconceptions).

We had been reckoning without Seán Horan, small of stature but big of heart. Seán, with tigerish determination, dispossesses the Kilcoole player and quickly transfers the ball to Billy Norman.

A beautifully weighted ball from Billy towards the right wing is flicked by Johnnie Grooms into the path of the inrushing Leon Hargan. Leon, without breaking stride, collects the pass and with the na?ve confidence of youth - more mature players might have hesitated - cannons the ball with net rupturing velocity past the helpless goalie. Now, for the first time in the game, the momentum is with Éire Óg. The scent of victory tinged their nostrils and they began to play with a confidence heretofore absent.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man - the one and only Willie 'Decibels' O'Hagan. Willie gains possession on the sideline close to the end-line, approaches the goal at a very acute angle. Under pressure he sets himself up to have a shot and one thinks 'you're being a bit ambitious here, Willie boy'! However, one was confounded. Willie, a la Mayo's Kieran McDonnell, uses the outside of his right boot to curve the ball between the posts. He added the equally spectacular insurance point a few minutes later.

A victory famous in its consequences, Éire Óg returns to Division 1 of the Whittle League for the first time in 20 years, but humbling in the manner of its achievement - we played second fiddle for most of the 60 minutes. One has even heard it said that it was a Kilcoole loss rather than an Éire Óg victory. However, the more perceptive of the analysts were attributing the victory to the superior strength of the Éire Óg panel. We were able to introduce five high calibre subs who played a significant part in the outcome. 29 players togged out for the game. A welcome embarrassment of talent and a testament to the important work done by Philip Smullen and his team at junior level. Indeed a number of the stars on the night graduated from junior ranks.

We play Carnew this week-end in our 1st game in the League.

Comhgáirdeachas to Tim Healy and to the County U-21s on their victory over Longford in the 1st round of the Leinster championship. Our representatives Lorcan Treanor, Roddy Carroll and Seán Horan did the club proud on the occasion. The team plays Laois this Saturday. Go n-eirí an t-ádh leo!

We in Éire Óg were extremely sorry to hear of the sudden death of the father of u-14 player, Seán Hughes. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. The coiste and all our members extend their sympathies to Seán and his family.

KILCOOLE

A huge crowd gathered at the Éire Óg grounds last Wednesday night for the Intermediate League play off. It was a tough match with both teams giving it their all, Kilcoole played some fine football and were ahead for most of the match. A late Greystones goal proved to be the turning point in the second half and Éire Óg went on to win by two points. The final score was Kilcoole 1-8 Éire Óg 1-10. The result means that Kilcoole will continue to play in Division 2 of the League for 2010. It was great to see such a large crowd at the match, your support is much appreciated.

Kilcoole started their Minor football league campaign away to Blessington last Saturday. Our lads started well in very wet conditions and lead at half time. We always felt Blessington might come back in the second half and they finished stronger to earn a draw in the dying minutes. We were missing some players and had some new additions to the squad. The final score was Blessington 0-12, Kilcoole 1-9. Kilcoole scorers were Darren Gammell 1-02, Danny Kavanagh 0-4, Ciaran Byrne 0-2 and Shane Doyle 0-1. Training is on Wednesday at 7.30pm and players are reminded that any outstanding memberships must be paid up and forms returned. Best of luck to our Minor players in the school final on Wednesday.
