Bhríde Carnew, winners of the South Leinster Schools Juvenile football C title.
Wednesday February 03 2010
Colaiste Bhride Carnew 2-10, Kilkenny CBS 3-4: The South Leinster Schools Juvenile football C title stays in County Wicklow for another year.
Last year it was De La Salle College Wicklow who were victorious but this time it is Jim Kirwan's talented team from Colaiste Bhride Carnew.
At a windy Carlow on Friday they had to fight hard to overcome a fine side from Kilkenny CBS.
Any ideas that the Kilkenny school would be lacking in football skills was soon dispelled as they scored two fine early goals against the gale force wind. The Carnew lads kept their composure and picked off some vital points.
At half-time Colaiste Bhride led by 1-8 to 3-1 but they defended very well in the second-half against the breeze as the Kilkenny school looked for goals.
The crucial scores for Carnew were goals by half-forward Martin Kelly and corner-forward Niall Hughes.
The trophy was presented to Colaiste Bhride captain Conor Lambert from Aughrim by Pat Henderson of Comhairle Laighean. The Carnew school will now play the Dublin champions in the Leinster semifinal.
Colaiste Bhride: Robert Fitzgerald, John Walsh, Stephen Barnes, P J Sheehan, Patrick Lancaster, James Nolan, Dean Barnes, Conor Lambert, Wayne Kinsella, Martin Kelly, Keith Farrell, Conall McCrea, Emmet O'Toole, John Fleming, Niall Hughes.
ABBEY PIPPED IN SENIOR D FINAL
St Paul's Monasterevin 3-9, Abbey CC Wicklow 4-5: Abbey Community College Wicklow have never won a Senior title at county or provincial level despite many near misses but they must be still wondering how they failed to capture the South Leinster Senior Football D title in Eire Og Carlow on Friday. Playing against a strong wind in the first-half they tore open the Monasterevin defence in breakaways, scoring three good goals and hitting the post twice. The score at the interval was Abbey CC 3-2, Monasterevin 0-8.
The Kildare school threw caution to the wind in the second-half and were rewarded with two early goals as the Wicklow defence faltered.
The game was evenly balanced now but Abbey still controlled midfield through Stuart Murphy and Theo Smith.
However they found scoring more difficult with wind assistance and wasted many chances.
Monasterevin added another goal but points by Philip Murphy and Jody Merrigan reduced the lead to three points. Abbey then wasted a number of good goal chances and Monasterevin broke away to score their only point of the half.
Abbey continued to press in the closing minutes but sub Dylan Franey's goals came too late and Monasterevin held on for a narrow win.
Abbey CC: Gerry Mora Kelly, James Cullen, Shane Doyle, Dale Quinn, Alan Hubbard, Jamie Snell, Dean Leonard, Jody Merrigan 0-1, Stuart Murphy, Sam O'Connor 01, Paddy Keogh, Brian Shannon 1-1, Theo Smith 1-0, Philip Murphy 1-1, Theo O'Leary. Subs. - Eric Conlon 0-1, Dylan Franey 1-0, Kevin Cullen
