Glitzy shindig for GAA stars
GAA President Christy Cooney will be the guest of honour at Wicklow's GAA sports awards presentation banquet in the Arklow Bay Hotel on Saturday night.
These equivalents of the Oscars honour the top performers in hurling and handball, football, camogie and ladies football in Wicklow during 2011.
In all 17 gongs will be presented to top achievers in every championship grade, including county teams, with the highlight and grand finale being announcing the 2011 winner of the hall of fame award.
This is the eight year of these coveted awards while the previous hall of fame winners are GAA president, Peter Keogh; John Kenny and Ken Browne, both from Baltinglass; Jack Kilbride, Carnew, Peter Clarke, Kilbride; Eamonn Murray, Avoca and London; Jimmy Hatton Kilcoole.
As well as the serious business of presenting the awards to the various winners, it is always a great social occasion with upwards of 400 people from the 40 clubs in the county packing into the banquet hall of the Arklow Bay Hotel for a night of revelry and reminiscences about times past in the GAA.
