Longford are next up as Wicklow stay on track

IT WAS a nice feeling picking up the daily papers on Monday morning and seeing Wicklow's footballers on top of their league table. Yet there is no room for any complacency in the push for promotion as two counties, Limerick and Clare, are still better placed, having dropped no points and having a game in hand.

Under-21s lose out: A GOOD win for Micko's men on Sunday but one that leaves a lot of unanswered questions. After four rounds of the league Wicklow have threes wins on the board and one very narrow defeat. That leaves them in a good enough position to make a big push for promotion, should Micko decide to go down that road.

A DOUBLE scores win over arch rivals Carlow at any time and in any game is always welcome. Keeping Wicklow's footballers in a challenging position for promotion is also a good thing to maintain interest and incentive in the remainder of the league.

THE U-21 footballers went oh so close to making it three wins from three matches for Wicklow teams at the weekend. Two missed goal opportunities midway through the first half cost Wicklow dearly in the end as they crashed to defeat to Laois by three points in the Leinster championship for a second successive year at Aughrim on Saturday.

THE DIVISION 3 South game between Aughrim and Annacurra a very exciting local derby, played in Annacurra. Aughrim got off to a good start with an early goal. Annacurra fought bravely and for most of the first half it was end to end stuff. Daniel Owens and Adam Rochford played well in the middle of the field for Aughrim while Oisin Furlong, brought on to strengthen the Annacurra midfield, and Elliot Robinson got stuck in and never let them dominate.

NO BIG matches at the weekend but did Micko's men get a well deserved rest. Not on your life; this human dynamo from Waterville never stops and sees no reason why his helpers or players should either. The usual midweek training went on on Tuesday and Thursday nights. On Saturday the action started with a training session in Annacurra at 11am and this was followed by a match between the U-21 team and Micko's back-up team

The club wishes to extend sympathy to the Byrne Family on the recent Death of Eddie Byrne, Tullow. May he rest in peace. As a mark of respect to the Byrne family, training was cancelled last Friday evening and resumes as normal next week. We wish the team every success for the year ahead and it is evident there is great optimism for 2010 with the well attended training sessions within the commencing stages of the year. A big thank you to both Margaret and John Cullen and also Kathleen Whelan on their kind gesture of providing soup and sandwiches for the first training session of the year.

The men's team were back in action last Saturday. The 2010 Division 1 League began with a home game against Carnew Emmets. The team which is under new management were looking for a good start to the year. It was apparent from the throw-in that they were eager to impress. Philip Healy got the first score; further points from Stephen Hurley and Healy again had us in the lead before Stephen crashed the ball to the back of the net for a great goal. When play resumed Arklow made the most of the running going in at half-time 18 to 0-6 points up. Mid-way through the second half there were good scores from Philip Gleeson and the impressive Niall Mullet, kicking over his fourth point after he replaced the injured Philip Healy. When the final whistle went Arklow were ahead by a point only for the referee to declare the game a draw 1-13 to 1-13 each. Men's training is back in the gym this week: Thursday at 8.20pm.
