The Wicklow Golf Club team that won the GUI Leinster Fourball recently.

WICKLOW: Wicklow Golf Club have waited nearly ten years to finally win the GUI Leinster Fourball for 2009. 86 clubs entered the competition back in April. Wicklow got a bye into the second round.

First match was to beat Courtown 4-1, third round beat Kilcoole 3-2, fourth round beat Arklow 4-1, fifth round beat Elm Park 4-1. In the semi-final Wicklow beat Slade Valley 4-1.

The final was played over two legs against Portarlington. After the first leg Wicklow were down 3-2 played on 29th August away. In the second leg Wicklow finished the day out winning three matches to two. This made the match all tied and a play-off was needed.

Due to the fact it was late in the day the GUI officials gave option of returning next day for play-off of finish it now. Both team captains agreed to play it then. Both teams selected their two players to compete in sudden-death play-off and after two holes Wicklow had succeeded in winning the Pennant.

The presentation was made in front of the clubhouse by the GUI to the Wicklow Fourball winning team.

The winning team were, Breffni McCabe, Des Kelly, Damien Glynn, Mick Campbell, Paul Barron, Tommy Kelly, Joe O'Flaherty, Shane Allen, Tom Cox, Ciarán Doyle, Jim McNamara, Pat Stapleton, Ray Moran, Seán Smullen, Bill Cunningham, Micheal Dwyer, Dave Finnegan. Team Captain was Martin McGettigan.

The club made a special presentation two weeks later to all the members of the team. All the members received a commerative jumper with Leinster Fourball winners 2009 on the crest. In return the team made a special presentation to team Captain Martin McGettigan and team selector Seán Smullen.

Next weekend is the last singles competition of the year and the winner of the DW Mogg trophy for Golfer of the Year will be decided with any of ten players in line to clinch the coveted trophy. Bank holiday weekend is also fast approaching and we are having an Open Fourball on Saturday, Sunday and Monday and we would appreciate your support. Timesheet is available in clubhouse.

Our open singles also continues every Tuesday and entry for visitors is €10.

BRIDGE HOTEL GOLF SOCIETY

The results of the Bridge Hotel Golf Society competition at Arklow Golf Club last week, which included the annual competition with the F.U.G.S. Golf Society

from Aberystyth,in Wales, resulted in a victory, with a very clear margin of 54pts for the B. H. G. S. The Society's own competition was won by, Roy Broaders with 33pts.

Class 1: John Huzzar 32pts; Class 2, Harry Kavanagh 30pts; Nearest the Pin John Murphy 150 ins. Longest Drive - Harry Kavanagh. Front Nine - Shaun Carey, 19pts; Back Nine - Tony Foley 15pts.

This weeks competition takes place at Blackwater Golf Club with the Final of the Match/Play, between John Huzzar and Jimmy Tyrrell.

Also with the play-off for Third and Fourth places, between Jim Hoey.and Ger.Nugent. Tee-off at 11 o'clock sharp.

CORNER HOUSE GOLF SOCIETY

The Corner House traveled to Park Tullow for their final outing of the year and the winners were as follows. Overall winner on the day was Bernard Kelly, winners in Category 1 were: 1st Martin Reilly, 2nd Stephen Byrne and 3rd Jack O'Reilly. Winners in Category 2 were: 1st Paul Riley, 2nd Mark O'Brien and 3rd was Pat Long. Winners in Category 3 were: 1st Seán Long, 2nd Josie Fortune and 3rd was Tony O'Regan. Team D were the winners of the team competition and congratulations to Seán Long who won the player of the year competition. The members would like to thank the committee of Pat Long, Eddie O'Regan, Bernard Kelly and Joe Donnelly for all their hard work over the year. The society will resume sometime early in the new year and new members are welcome.
