AGB
The ladies season kicked off last Friday night and started on a great note with 42 girls training. The Minor ladies didn't have much time to prepare as they squad took on St. Pat's of Wicklow in the opening game of the Ladies Minor League at Laragh.
Both clubs struggled to field a full squad as many of the girls are tackling their mock exams this week and good luck to all who find themselves in that challenging situation. AGB managed with help from under-16 and under-14's and a very spirited 12-a-side game was enjoyed by players and spectators alike.
St. Pat's made a very strong start and dominated at centre-field and in the forward positions and despite a brave defence by the Arklow side they went into the break with a 2-05 to 0-01 lead. Sinead Arthur was first on target for AGB and was unlucky not to add two more to her tally, sending them narrowly wide.
In the second half the Arklow girls enjoyed a very good spell in the opening 10 minutes. Hardworking Sinead Arthur added a second point and a goal and a point from Aine O'reilly kept the Arklow spirits up. Pat's rallied with two more points and then Georgina Canavan added two more for Arklow. Entering the final 10 minutes the score stood 2-07 to 1-05 and the contest was more even.
However, Pat's showed their superiority in the closing stages, running at the tiring Arklow defence and added a point and two late goals. Arklow's Sinead Arthur took another point for her side and Katie Furlong added a super goal at the close. The final score was 5-8 to 2-6 and while there remains a lot to be done, the Arklow trainers were very encouraged by many aspects of the game, primarily the girls' determination to contest every ball up to the final whistle. Well done to Kayleigh Carter, Emma Furlong and Joy Earls who made their minor debut and contributed greatly to the game. The Minors will be out again next weekend and are looking forward to building on a very positive start.
Our on the Greens Programme will commence this Saturday the 11th with a FUN introduction to GAA football for children from 4-14 between 121pm. We will be playing football at Knockmore, Meadow Vale, Lamberton, Church View, The Pines, Woodlands and Cluain Ard over the next three Saturdays so if you can't make it this Saturday we'll be at one of the above venues again on either, Saturday the 18th or the 25th so you have plenty of opportunity to join in the fun.
AGB Juvenile Club Presentations will take place on 19th February at 2pm in the Arklow Bay Hotel. The event will be held in the upstairs conference room and will be followed by a disco. All team coaches are asked to attend with their groups on the day. We hope to see all our juvenile members and their families there to help us celebrate 2011 Season!
