Hyland returns to hurling squad
Wednesday March 10 2010
DON HYLAND has come out of intercounty retirement to give Wicklow hurlers a dig out after a dismal playing season in 2009.
The Carnew man, who is now 37 years of age, had decided to hang up his hurl at the start of 2009 after an inter-county career that spanned 20 years and saw him win every hurling honour available to him in the game including a Railway Cup medal with Leinster.
But as Wicklow seeks to recover from the disaster of last year, when they won only one game for the entire year and were relegated to division 3B of the league, Hyland has responded to the call.
Don Hyland lined out at full-forward for Wicklow on Saturday and gave an extra bite to their attack as they got their league campaign off to a winning start away to Fingal at Swords.
Hyland made his presence felt as he scored two of Wicklow points in their 0-15 to 1-7 win before he was dismissed on two yellow cards ten minutes into the second half.
Team manager Casey O'Brien said: 'Don is a player with silken hurling skills and he is an invaluable boost to the team and an inspiration to the young players on the team. Don has lost none of his enthusiasm for the game and has been doing gym training himself over the winter to keep fit'.
