Hurling

Spotlight switches to Senior hurling championship

Wednesday September 01 2010

THE SPOTLIGHT switches to the Senior hurling championship this weekend with the two knock-out quarterfinals down for decision.

Kiltegan and Avondale do battle at Aughrim on Friday night while Bray Emmets and Arklow Rock Parnells lock horns at Aughrim on Saturday.

After their shock defeat in the football quarter-finals last weekend, Kiltegan must now focus all their attention on hurling and they are not going to find things easy either against a steadily improving Avondale side.

John Mitchell's Avondale looked quite impressive in their last outing against Bray Emmets when they came away with a draw, whereas Kiltegan conceded a walkover to Glenealy two weeks ago in order to concentrate on their football quarter final against St. Patrick's who came back from the dead in the last eight minutes to sneak a shock one point win.

Meantime Bray Emmets should have a much easier passage to the semi-finals when on Saturday at Aughrim they take on an ARP team that is experiencing an annus horribilis this year.

Meanwhile, the draws for Wicklow's Senior hurling championship semi-finals were made at Monday night's meeting as follows:

Glenealy v. Bray Emmets or Arklow Rock Parnells; Carnew v. Kiltegan or Avondale. The semi-finals are fixed for weekend of September 18, but as Bray Emmets are still in the football championship as well as the hurling, the date of Glenealy's semi-final may have to be changed if Bray beat ARP.
