Arklow Boxing Club plan for new season

AT A meeting of club coaches and senior boxers in Arklow Boxing Club on Wednesday night details of the programme for the new season which begins next week were discussed and ratified.
Coaches Jackie Manley and Eoin Pluck take charge of the beginners on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-12 year olds 5.30 pm to 7 pm, 12 upwards 7-8 pm, beginning on 14th September
Coaches Pat Mythen, Martin Wolohan, Sean Allen and Fergal Redmond train the more established boxers and Seniors on Mondays and Wednesdays 7 - 8.30 pm, with extra nights being added coming up to Championships etc.
Cost of membership is €5 per week - to be paid in advance €20 at the first training session of each month.
A major tournament to celebrate the coming 100th anniversary or the IABA during this boxing season will be run by the Arklow club in the Arklow Bay Hotel on Friday night, November 5, and will feature Arklow's best Juveniles and Seniors v. a selection from various clubs in Ireland.
This will be a sponsored tournament to raise much-needed funds for the club. Arklow officials are delighted that John Joe's Social Club are going to sponsor the trophies on the night. More details of this tournament will be issued in October.
The championships begin in mid October with entries in the Leinster Michael Andrews Tournament Boys 1+2+3 and Karl Kendrick in action in the National U-21 in The National Stadium
The best of the Boy 4 and Youth 1+2 will enter The Leinster Michael Andrews Tournament in the Stadium in November.
Senior Boxers Adam Keenan and Sean O'Neill enter the Leinster Intermediates and Novice championships also in November.
Arklow light heavyweight national Intermediate champion Sean Allen and Arklow's Iiternational boxer Fergal Redmond will be entering the Irish Senior Elite Championships which begin in mid February. Both are expected to do well.
Arklow boxers will also participate in an inter-county between Wicklow and Wexford which is hoped to take place in Bray before Christmas (date to be decided).
It is expected that European and World champion Katie Taylor will top the bill on that occasion.
The club congratulate coach Jim Moore who is now Youth Coach of The National High Performance team who has just returned from the World Youth Olympics in Singapore where Belfast Light Flyweight Ryan Burnett won a gold medal defeating Salman Alizida of Aberbayjan 13-8 in the final. Burnett later put his success down to the game plan of his coach Jim Moore which he followed exactly and it paid off.
All and all a very busy time for Arklow and we look forward to new members and wish everyone success over the coming months.
