Arklow Racquetball Club

The Doubles and Overage national Championships were held at Kilkenny over last weekend while there was a small entry of players competition was never the less very keen.

There were a total of eight titles up for grabs and Arklow were successful in taking three the men's open doubles men's 30+ and 40+ singles.

In the men's open doubles it was a tough match between Adam Neary and Mark Murphy they had a good win over Jimmy Gannon and Pa O'donnell to take Arklow/kilkenny first title.

The 30+ singles was an all Arklow affair as Joe Farrell and Adam Neary reached the final and there were no quarters given as both men tried to lift the title.

But in the end it was Joe Farrell came out on top.

In the 40+ Jimmy Gannon played some of his best Racquetball to date when he overcame Belfast man Stephen O Loan to take Arklow second singles title.

On the home front the Arklow club c/ships will be held during the next month and after that it is the staging of the Arklow Irish Open which will be held during the May bank holiday weekend.

Racquetball on Monday nights continues and all are welcome to come along and try their hand from 7.40pm to 9 pm.

Carnew AFC

Our under-8's travelled to Arklow on Saturday and were unlucky to lose 4-2. The boys were by far the better team on the day playing some great football but unfortunately some decisions including a penalty went against them on the day. But heads up and they will be back on form next weekend. Player of the week went to Josh White; Josh is a great team player, works hard and is like lightning on the pitch.

Our under-10's made the long trip to Ardmore Sunday morning with the bare team and lost their first game of the year. It is only the second game of the shield and there is a long way to go and I am sure they won't let this little mishap affect them too much. Player of the week went to Conor Wafer, a dedicated team player.

Our under-13's are on fire at the moment and just one game away from the league title. They hosted Wolfetone C on Sunday morning and showed them how to score goals with an impressive 7-1 win. Scores came from Darragh Kinsella - yes that's right our goalie Darragh, Jon Holmes, Kaid Askins, Colm Hayes, Hannah Kilbride, an own goal and a new contender for goal of the season from Jack Nolan with a 35 yard volley. Player of the week went to Hannah Kilbride who has only started playing this season but has already brought a lot to the team and scored on her debut.

Our under-15's were looking forward to getting back in action but unfortunately the game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch so they will have to wait another week.

Don't forget to add us on facebook - Carnew AFC. Anyone that has any team photo's can send them to carnewafc@gmail.com and we can load them to facebook.

Wicklow Rovers

The first team took on Cherry Orchard at the Whitegates on Saturday afternoon; their opponents are the only team to defeat the lads in league action this season so far.

On a day when conditions were not ideal for football it was the visitors who were first to threaten, in a first half of limited chances it was the Orchard who went in front when they converted one of the very few clear cut chances to go in at the break one nil up.

The second half saw the lads get forward more without testing the away keeper but all the time the away side looked dangerous on the break. With 13 minutes remaining on the clock second half substitute Ken Doyle swung in an excellent cross from the right wing which Paul O'neill squared to Darragh O'donnell who slotted home the equaliser.

In a tight game the lads had two excellent chances in the dying minutes but both Luke Byrne and Jim Foley were denied. This was a good point from a game which at one stage looked like drifting away from them.

The Premier team had no game while the third team suffered a disappointing 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Roundwood with Jonathan Dunne scoring the goal. Our youths went down 3-1 to Rathnew, Ryan Bloomfield scoring the goal.

The under-11 girls received a walkover from Cloghertown Utd. The 13's made it nine wins from nine games when they defeated Balrath 4-0, Rioghna Mcgettigan brought her tally for the season to seven when she netted a brace while Kate Hennessy and Eve Christie added singles to retain their one hundred percent record. The under-15 girls match was cancelled. Everyone at the club would like to congratulate former player Davy O'sullivan on being short listed for the honour of Ireland's Junior Player of the Year, Davy has been nominated in the final three and has being invited to attend the FAI International Awards on Sunday the 26th February, the awards banquet will be televised live from RTE Studios in Donnybrook that evening starting at 6pm.

His performances with the club in last season's FAI and Leinster Junior cups saw him gain an international call up to the Republic of Ireland Junior side where he went on to be one of the key figures in the Irish team's magnificent journey in the European Regions championship in Portugal.

He played a major part in helping the team reach the final, scoring a couple of goals on the way. On route to the final they drew with Turkey while defeating both Serbia and Russia, incidentally it was Davy's winning goal against Russia which saw them progress to the final where they were unlucky to lose out to hosts Portugal.

This is a great achievement and recognition of a lot of hard work from Davy. Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to wish you the best of luck on the night while also congratulating you on your nomination; this is a truly well deserved honour for a player who turned in excellent performances week in week out for club and country, well done Davy from everyone at Wicklow Rovers.

We had one player in the hat-trick club this week and what a performance it was. Eoin Mcaulay hit an excellent double hat-trick for the under-14a's in their 9-0 win at home to St Anthonys, six goals in one game was a great achievement, well done Eoin.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Frank Marron who sadly passed away recently; our thoughts are with you all at this sad time, may he rest in peace.

Arklow Lawn Tennis Club

Dublin Winter Leagues 2012 Ladies Class 5 Section C Arklow 1 v Rathgar 4 Arklow 1 Ladies team kicked off their 2012 campaign this weekend following the postponement of their first match last week due to flooded courts in Charlesland.

The back match against Rathgar 4 was played on Saturday 4/2/12 in Rathgar at 3.30 p.m.

The weather was kind to us all at the start but quickly decided it was bored and that we needed a good shower to motivate us and motivate us it did.

Irene Ryder and Kay Hickey won comfortably in 2 sets, Jacintha Kinch and Lucia Mcmahon narrowly missed out taking their match to a 3rd set so at 1 match apiece the gauntlet was thrown down to Martina Behan (Captain) and Mags Kelly to secure victory.

At 1 set each and 2 all in the 3rd set they found that 6th gear and won out 6/2. 2 points in the bag after our first match, well done team! De Vesci 2 v Arklow 1 On Sunday 5/2/12 the Ladies Team travelled to play away to De Vesci in the lovely scenic surroundings of their club grounds. Conditions were perfect for the fine tennis which ensued from all 3 pairings.

Martina Behan and Mags Kelly came off court first with a comprehensive 2 set win. Jacintha Kinch and Lucia Mcmahon got their 3rd set in this match and following excellent tennis from both sides, they bagged this one, well done! Irene Ryder & Kay Hickey took their match to a climatic 3rd set also and went on to win and secure the 3rd point for the team. Best wishes to the Ladies for the remaining matches. Mens Class 7 Section E Arklow 1 Mens team got off to a great start in the Winter Leagues with back to back matches on Saturday 4/2/12 and Sunday 5/2/12.

A 3-0 victory over Mount Pleasant 7 on Saturday gave the team a great boost going into Sunday's match against Wicklow 4. A winning scoreline of 2-1 puts the team in a great position on 5 points in their section, possible table toppers pending other match results. Well done to the team, best of luck for the remaining matches.

Newtown Juniors FC

Only four of our team's saw action last weekend as pitches once again fell foul of the weather.

The under- 8's travelled to Kilmac but lost 4nil to Glencormac United but had their moments during the game. The under-15's travelled to Greystones and came away with an emphatic 9-1 win.

Kenneth Turner and Dillon Carthy both scored hat tricks and there were also goals for Evan Moran, Ross Davis and Robert Greenan.

Nice to see the injury list clearing up at last for this team as a number of players made their return after lengthy lay-offs. The under-15's girls travelled to Castleknock and suffered only their second defeat of the season on a 5-3 scoreline.

The score was 2-all at half time but the team just couldn't get their noses in front and will probably be disappointed with their overall team display. On the day Katie Miley scored twice while Niamh O'brien also scored and Miley, Chelsee Snell and Kelsea Parsons played anywhere near the standards this team has set in recent games.

The 17's girl's played a friendly in Greystones and ran out 5-nil winners thanks to 5 different goalscorers. Elaine Sutton, Amy Murphy, Laura O'neill, Cliona Crammond (pen) and Katie Miley scored the goals in an excellent allround team display.

Three players from the club celebrate their birthdays in the coming week and they are Darragh Heffernan from the Under 8's, Josh Kennedy from the Under 10's and Adam Kiernan from the Under 12's. Happy birthday lads from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

No matches for the 17's or Development team last weekend, but there was for the first and second team and these matches resulted in two good wins for both teams.

Goals from Dessie Waters and John Tierney secured three points for the first team away to Enniskerry on a 2-1 scoreline.

Similar scoreline for the second team away to Wolfe Tone Celtic where Tom Fitzsimons and Terry Murphy scored the goals.

Congratulations to Development team manager Ritchie Dalton who has won the LFL Manager of the month award for January. Well done Ritchie.

The winner in our Member's draw was Keegan Fitzpatrick and he receives €300. Well done Keegan. Fixtures etc can be viewed on the new league website www.wdfl.ie
