Top talent on the stage at Scor finals
Wednesday March 03 2010
There was definite signs of a come back in what is called the social arm of the GAA when the Wicklow Finals of Scor were held in the new Parish hall in Roundwood on Saturday night.
There was good contests in most sections and the attendance was up on recent years. Secretary John Timming and Chairman Ton Walsh were very pleased with the show.
According to John Timmins the signs for the future are good; We had to stop the slide before we could start to build again he said. When Scor was in it speak even the massive An Tochar Club house just upthe road was hard pressed to cater for the crowd.
The highlight of the night was, without doubt the two novelty acts. An Tochar set the standard with Don Ferguson's production 'Global Warming' but veterans of the stage like John Sullivan, Din Doran, James Doran and Tom Culkin were not going to part with their title easily.
There were other high points. That star of many great shows Ettie KIlbride again won the recitation with her own composition 'The Dance in Bullingate'.
The question time specialists Liam O'Loughlin, Eddie O'Byrne and Andy Merrigan form Aughrim met their match this time in the Sheen family and Seamus Byrne from Avondale.
Liam O'Loughlin was the MC for the night and the judges were Judy Heffernan and Jackie Doran from Wexford.
However, in some ways the old order changed little. Carnew were still the dominant club and their Novelty act 'Ding Dong in the Dail' - still brought down the house. And the home club An Tochar were back as the kingpins of the Set Dance, which is still the best event to lift the crowd and send everyone home happy.
In all Carnew brought home four county titles, the Novelty Act, Ballad Group, Recitation and Solo Singing. Avondale were tops in Question Time while An Tochar won the Set Dancing. On the down side there was no entries in Instrumental Music or Ceile Dancing.

■ Judie Heffernan and Jackie Doran from Wexford were the Judges and Co President Peter Keogh president.
■ The big question at the end of the show was, as always 'how will the winners do in the Leinster semi finals?.
Well the Novelty act could take beating. As the title 'Ding Dong in the Dail' suggests it had something to do with Leinster House but somehow ended up in the National Boxing stadium for a big fight between Battling Brian and Eager Enda. After a great Scrap both 'fighters' somehow managed to knock each other out 'cold'
After an examination a very worried looking Doctor stood up and announced 'I have very bad news for the country, both men will make a full recovery.'
