Wednesday February 17 2010
THE SCOTTISH U-17 and U-20 Championships took place in Glasgow at the weekend where a number of Wicklows athletes had been selected to compete for Leinster.
The day started on a positive note when Claire Earls and Ellie Hartnett took gold and silver in the 800 metres with Aisling McGee coming in sixth position
In the U-17 event Claire Fox and Amy Howard, both competing in their first 800 metres of the year, narrowly failed to make the finals but finished well in their heats.
In the U-20 1,500 metres there was mixed fortunes for the Cathal Daly and Niamh Kearney, Cathal returning from a slight injury performed well to finish fifth in the final in a tactical 1,500 metres while Niamh Kearney took the gold in the women's 1,500 metres.
Niamh also gained selection for the junior international this weekend in Cardiff. Patrick Costello and Ferdia Kenny went next in the 60 metres and 200 metres, a busy day for the pair, who seemed to be racing consistently in heats and semi-finals and finals.
Patrick, coming back from illness, progressed to the semi-finals in both 60 metres and 200 metres. Ferdia however made it through to the finals of both the 200 metres and 60 metres, taking a bronze medal in the 60 metres, however a disqualification in the 200 metres stopped the opportunity to claim a double medal at the championships.
Caoimhe Basquille, Linda Earls, Laura Boylan and Isabel Malley all took place in the sprints during the day, Linda and Laura marginally missed placed in the final after running strong heats, Caoimhe made it through to the final of the 60 metres hurdles after running a personal best in the heat, a day that also saw her finish fifth in the High Jump, Isabel Malley also narrowly missed a final spot in the 60 sprint.
In the Leinster Senior Cross Country championships in Kilkenny this weekend, Mick Dowling and Micheal Kavanagh in the junior mens finished in fifth and 16th respectively while Una Brittion finished 23rd in the senior women's race.
