Arklow United crash out as Duffy nets double for Wicklow Town 'B'

Action from the Wicklow Cup game between Wicklow Rovers and Glenview FC.
OH WICKLOW Cup, you never fail to disappoint.
Wicklow's premier competition always managers to throw up a good Cupset and this year proved no different, with one particular unexpected result dominating the weekend. Unfortunately, that proved to be the one and only underdog success story this week, with the big clubs all managing to avoid banana skins.
The match that will have raised eyebrows took place at Ferndale Park where third placed Division 1 side Arklow United were playing host to high-flying Wicklow Town B.
Wicklow Town are yet to taste defeat in the league this season and they carried their scintillating league form into the cup competition as they booked their place in the next round courtesy of a 0-2 win over the Arklow side.
Thomas Duffy landed both goals for the Finlay Park side (with one of those efforts coming from the penalty spot).
Premier Division high-flyers Arklow Town A and Newtown United A both faced treacherous paths into the next stage as they faced trips to Division 1 opposition.
The Fassaroe Community Centre was where Arklow Town Fennell's solo strike to earn them a hardfought 0-1 win.
Newtown's challengers Rathnew AFC B lay in wait at Shamrock Park as they looked to knock the cup holders out but the Magpies survived and emerged triumphant by three goals to two.
John Heffernan was United's top marksman with two goals, with Jason Fitzsimons also on target. Jay Taylor netted both of the home side's goals. Newtown United have enjoyed unrivalled success in this competition in recent years but one side who have been suffering at the opposite end of the spectrum is Wicklow Rovers, who have had to make do with silver medals twice in the last four seasons.
But they marched into the next round following a 0-4 thumping of Glenview FC at the Vevay Temple Sportsfield.
Goals from Sean Tobin, Neil Doyle and Mark O'sullivan handed the Whitegates club a 0-3 lead at the break and Kevin Coady came off the bench to put some gloss on the scoreline with a fortuitous fourth for his side late on.
And while that four goal victory may have been impressive, it wasn't nearly as impressive as Cian Mcgoldrick's performance for Glencormac United at Ryder's Field where the attacker's four goal haul single-handedly dumped Roundwood of the competition.
Mcgoldrick bagged all four goals for his side as they recorded a 4-0 romp over the Vartry Grounds side.
That victory was all the sweeter for the Glens as it was over one of their rivals, but they won't be drawing their fiercest rivals Enniskerry in the next round as both of the Berryfield Lane sides bowed out of the competition this week.
It was an all-division 2 clash at Rooster's Lane as Conary United flattened Enniskerry YC B by five goals to one. Alex Bursey managed the visitors' consolation effort.
And it was a similar tale of woe for Enniskerry YC A on Friday night. Ballywaltrim Recreational Park was the destination for them as they locked horns with Richmond Rovers, a side whom they had trounced 5-0 just five days earlier.
But Richmond Rovers got their vengeance as Jamie Quiney's strike on the stroke of half time earned them a 1-0 success.
There was another minor surprise taking place at Dunne's Field on Sunday afternoon. Current Division 3 leaders entertained struggling Division 2 side Charlesland AFC and the hosts ended the Greystones' Wicklow Cup dreams courtesy of a 3-1 triumph.
Tony Darcy bagged a brace for Celtic, with PJ O'keefe also notching. Garry White netted for Charlesland. Reigning Premier Division champions were handed a difficult obstacle to overcome if they were hoping to improve on last year's showing.
Division 2 table-toppers Ashford Rovers visited Finlay Park baying for an upset but they returned home to Ballilea having suffered defeat despite an extremely valiant effort.
Rovers actually took the lead through Danny Byrne and went into the half time break with a 1-2 lead thanks to Brian Fagan.
But the dismissal of one of their players proved costly as it allowed Wicklow Town to storm to a 4-2 victory in the second period.
Maurice Dunne (2), Warren Gormley and David O'connor found the back of the net for the hosts.
Last year's runners-up seemed to have a relatively straightforward path into the next stage with a home tie against Division 3 St. Kevin's.
But in the end the 2008/9 champions required goals from Don Jackman and Keith Nolan to scrape a 2-1 win over the Saints.
Top flight Rathnew AFC A also found things a little trickier than they might have expected this weekend. They trekked down to the Back Alley to face Carnew Celtic.
The Villagers found themselves deadlocked at 00 at the break but the introduction of Jody Merrigan proved the turning point for Rathnew, with him bagging two goals and his brother Paul also netting as they picked up a 0-3 win.
Aughrim Rangers and St. Fergal's AFC B can both cross the Wicklow Cup off their wish-list as they were both edged out of the competition this weekend.
St. Patrick's did the damage for Aughrim Rangers. Singles from Johnny Arthur, John Kavanagh and Adam Tuke saw the Saints steal a victory at Allen Park.
And Arklow Town B proved to be St. Fergal's' downfall.
The Division 3 side gave an extremely good account of themselves before eventually succumbing to a 2-3 defeat in Bray.
Alan Sunderland, Matt Hudson and Ed Dunne all registered efforts for the Bridgewater Centre Park's second team.
One of the outside bets for this competition could well be Celtic Stars who smoothly advanced beyond round two on Sunday. Fellow Division 2 side Wicklow Rovers B were hoping to upset their hosts but Robert Ryan, Daniel Egan, Sean Kinsella and Ray Murphy all got themselves on the scoresheet as the Drummin side emerged 4-2 winners.
There were just two more meetings in the Wicklow Cup this weekend and they saw very contrasting results for Arklow Celtic.
Their Premier Division team flexed their attacking muscles as they recorded a landslide 1-5 victory over fellow Arklow side MK Dons.
Jason Wolohan (2), Mark Wolohan, Lee Doyle and Paddy Cowan scored for the Celtic Park side in that one.
Meanwhile, it was not such a good day for Arklow Celtic B who crashed to a 0-6 defeat at home to Division 1's Avonmore FC.
Dean Gahan and Seamus Mcgraynor both racked up doubles for the visitors, with David Carter and Paudie O'toole also on target.
