Eddie Gomley looks on the bright side

Wednesday March 10 2010

DISSAPOINTING but encouraging They were the views of Bray Wanderers manager Eddie Gormley after seeing his side robbed at the death in their 1,000th senior competitive appearance. His side hit the woodwork and saw a penalty saved in the first half before succumbing to defeat when Dundalk struck in the 90th minute, a right old kick in the proverbials for the no-nonsense Dubliner.

'We were very, very disappointed (to have lost). The players were very disappointed. But we have to take the positives out of the game and the positives are we dominated the game from start to finish. But it was just one of those things where we got hit with a sucker-punch.'

Things may well have turned out different had Dundalk defender Liam Burns been sent off when he fouled Shane O'Neill in the 2nd minute to concede a penalty, but Gormley doesn't want to dwell on the referee's decision (or lack of one).

'I don't like to see players being sent off but I was disappointed with the referee's decision not to send their player (Liam Burns) off. He's awarded the penalty and their player was the last man and according to rules, he should be sent off. It is frustrating, it's the inconsistency.

'But I'd rather concentrate on the performance of the players and if we perform like we did on Friday week in, week out, we give ourselves a very good opportunity of staying in the Premier Division.'

Wanderers will be hoping for a similar performance but a slightly more positive result from this Friday's trip to Terryland Park, where they will face Sean Connors' Galway United, who also tasted defeat in their season opener.
