Fairwood Celtic net magnificent seven in opener

Wednesday September 01 2010

Fairwood Celtic made a riproaring start to the new season on Sunday, charging into top spot with a crushing 7-0 win over St. Kevin's.

The Charlie Byrne Cup champions played host to the recently relegated side but their hospitality left a lot to be desired, smashing seven past their visitors.

Striker Tony Darcy was responsible for four of those strikes, while Colm Kenny, John Blake and Austin Brennan all also got their names on the scoresheet for the Coolboy side.

Redbank United are another side who have dropped down from Division 2 this season but they had contrasting fortunes compared to their local rivals, picking up a 4-2 win over Aughrim Rangers at Allen Park .

The Knockatemple side, the unfortunate whipping boys of Wicklow League's third tier in recent years, will be hoping for a new lease of life in Division 3 and they made the perfect start thanks to goals from Michael Kinsella (2), Jason Brady and Barry Stapleton.

Colin Mallick and Nathan Bray were on target for Rangers.

Two new clubs mate their Wicklow League bow on Sunday, with Gorey based Saints FC taking on Carnew Celtic and it was the former who had a debut to remember, going into second place after a 4-0 win. John Murray, Chris Sheridan, Dermot Byrne and Anthony Sherriff shared goalscoring duties between them, bagging a goal apiece.

Fassaroe YC B also banged in four goals at the weekend as they emerged 4-2 winners over Arklow Celtic B at the Arklow venue. Lee Meaney notched twice for the Bray side and team-mates William Cox and Stephen McGrane also registered efforts.

Greystones United B were another side getting their first taste of Division 3 action but they were left with a sour taste their mouth after succumbing to a 3-0 defeat at home to Wicklow Town B.

Tommy Duffy, Trevor Doyle and Gavin Dunne did the damage for the Finlay Park side.

It also proved a day to forget for Wicklow Town 's local rivals Wicklow Rovers, as they lost out to Conary United on a scoreline of two goals to one.

Eddie Roche and Stephen McAuley got the goals as United got their campaign off to the perfect start.
