Greene rescues Clash Celtic

A tussle between Enniskerry's Simon Chadwick and Seán Boyle of Clash Celtic.

CLASH CELTIC defender David Greene snatched a very late point for his side on Sunday afternoon with a dramatic 93rd minute leveller. Enniskerry had looked set for all three points from this Division 3 encounter thanks to striker Ben Rooney's 76th minute effort but a full 180 seconds into second half injury time the hosts were denied the victory that their performance deserved by Greene's 20-yard strike.
It was a very exciting end to a match that was anything but. Conditions certainly didn't help, with the pitch clearly showing the effects of the heavy rain in recent weeks. The wind was also a very unwelcome visitor at the Ballyman Road and it was about as vicious as a Roy Keane-Alf Inge Halaand tackle, making it extremely difficult for either side to get into any real rhythm.
Both teams did their best in the difficult conditions though and it was the hosts who made the first serious venture into the opposition half when winger Seamus Barcoe broke through some lacklustre challenges before lobbing one over the crossbar from the edge of the area.
Man of the match Ben Rooney gave the first indication of his potential threat for Enniskerry when he collected a Gary McGrath pass on 22 minutes before sending a long range effort narrowly wide of Celtic goalkeeper Thomas James Carter's far post.
Carter may have been the busier of the goalkeepers up until this point, but Neal Blackbyrne could well have been picking the ball out of the back of his net had Ger Byrne made a better connection with Christopher Kennedy's left wing cross in the 32nd minute.
Ben Rooney was then prevented from opening the scoring four minutes before the half time break after some very good goalkeeping from Carter. A mistake by one of Carter's defenders allowed Rooney to race through on goal but Carter rushed from his goal and made himself big to deny Rooney just as he looked set to pull the trigger.
The visitors almost got their second half off to the perfect start when striker Gareth Hamilton got in behind the Enniskerry defence but the number 10 dragged his shot wide.
The Rathdrum club again went close to taking the lead when midfielder Gael Forlot spun on the edge of the D before sending an audacious lob just over the top of Blackbyrne's crossbar on the hour mark.
Enniskerry substitute Phily Dunne almost made an immediate impact when he headed Ronan Bourke's corner towards the top corner but team-mate Ben Rooney nodded it wide while trying to divert it past Carter with 15 minutes remaining.
But while on that occasion Rooney may have lacked the finishing abilities a certain namesake of his possess, just three minutes later he did hit the back of the net.
A punt forward from the back seemed to be a lost cause but the youngster raced after it nonetheless. Right back Denis Heffernan had plenty of time to clear the ball but he stalled, presuming Carter was coming to clear the ball while Carter remained on his goal-line expecting Heffernan to clear the danger. Carter did come to his team-mate's aid eventually but it was too late and the end result was Rooney was able to steal in and roll it into am empty net to punish the lapse in concentration. Clash's Seán Boyle may well have pegged Enniskerry back just three minutes later when the ball broke to him in the area after the home defence had failed to clear their lines but centre half Alan O'Reilly spared his side's blushes with a superb last ditch tackle.
In the closing stages of the match a few rash tackles saw tempers boil over from both sides but the visitors mood's changed for the better when Greene curled the ball home.
